On October 6, 2020, Egypt held its second round of parliamentary elections, the first since the country’s constitutional amendments in 2019. The elections were held in two stages, with the first round occurring on October 6 and the second on November 10.

The second round of voting saw the opposition parties making a strong showing, with the liberal Wafd Party and the leftist Tagammu Party both gaining seats. The turnout for the second round was slightly higher than the first, at around 30%.

The new parliament is expected to be dominated by the pro-government coalition, which is likely to pass legislation that is favorable to the government. The opposition parties will play a more limited role, with their main focus being on monitoring the government’s performance and pushing for reforms.

The new parliament is expected to convene in late December 2020.
